The kremlin is showing a nervous reaction to the wave of bans on russian state media in Europe. Restrictions imposed by Germany, France, Switzerland, Belgium, Greece and Romania and other European countries have become a painful blow to the rf’s system of foreign propaganda.

France has blocked visas for russian journalists and restricted the broadcasting of russian TV channels. Berlin has refused to grant a residence permit to an employee of “rossiya segodnya”. The EU has stopped broadcasting and blocked online access to “RIA Novosti”, “All-Russia State Television and Radio Broadcasting Company” and other kremlin sites.

moscow calls this “censorship” and threatens to retaliate through both – russian laws and international organizations. At the OSCE level, russia continues to make accusations of “discrimination,” but these statements are not supported by most countries.

Note. In russia, after 2022, a significant number of Western media outlets, such as the BBC, Deutsche Welle, Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty, CNN and The Guardian, have been banned or severely restricted for covering the war in Ukraine and criticizing the regime. Roskomnadzor has been blocking their websites, and laws on “foreign agents” and “undesirable organizations” have forced many outlets to cease operations in the country. At least 50-70 western media outlets have faced bans or censorship, and many foreign journalists have left the rf due to the threat of persecution.
