russia Is losing Influence in the Sahel Region of Africa
6/11/2025

russia is facing an increasingly noticeable loss of influence in the Sahel Region, despite the active transfer of heavy weapons and efforts to strengthen its military presence through the newly created “African Corps”. Statements about the allegedly “successful completion of the mission” of the “wagner” group in Mali contrast sharply with the facts on the ground: the security situation keeps deteriorating.
On the day of the announcement of the “wagner”’s withdrawal, Malian government forces suffered significant losses and lost control of the strategic military camp of Bulkési. Responsibility for a number of attacks was claimed by the al-Qaeda-affiliated JNIM group, which has up to six thousand fighters and de facto forms a proto-state formation from Western Mali to Northern Benin.
