The kremlin Uses Poverty and Unemployment to Stay in Power

The Republic of Ingushetia ranks first in terms of unemployment not only in the North Caucasus, but also in the entire rf – in 2024, it was 12 times higher than the average in the country. This is a direct result of moscow’s insidious policy, as the capital’s efforts are aimed at pacifying and keeping one of the most rebellious republics in check.

The policy of the “center” is based on two directions. Firstly, the kremlin continues to support kadyrov’s attempts to absorb Ingushetia. Secondly, the region’s economy is developing exclusively in industries that are beneficial to the central government. Therefore, local residents are dependent on federal subsidies and social programs.

In general, poverty and the center’s subsidy needle make it impossible for Ingushetia to reboot the region’s economy, become an independent entity, and eventually resume its protest stance in the country. According to the kremlin’s philosophy, this makes it easier to control the population, and in case of social discontent, it will be easier to justify new repressions.

Today, this technology is still working. But if moscow increases its current trajectory and applies this policy to other “non-russian” republics, it will face an explosion of public outrage which the center and its agents will no longer be able to suppress.
