Among the archival documents of the Foreign Intelligence Service of Ukraine regarding the figures of the Ukrainian national liberation movement, there are interesting statements, quotations, testimonies, reminiscences about their participation in the struggle for Ukraine’s statehood. Based on these materials, we can trace and assess the role of prominent Ukrainians in the creation of the state, their contribution to Ukraine's independence and struggle for its restoration.

On the eve of the anniversary of the 1991 All-Ukrainian Referendum on the declaration of independence of Ukraine, we think of  the words of one of the founders of Ukraine's Independence, Denys Kvitkovskyi:

“Our policy is a liberating policy. It is based on the principle proclaimed by Mykola Mikhnovskyi in 1900 in his brochure “Independent Ukraine”: “As long as a foreigner dominates at least one piece of Ukrainian territory, ... all generations of Ukrainians will go to war...

In this struggle for the state, the nation as a cultural-historical and political value, is and must be at the core of our thinking and interest. Until we enshrine the Ukrainian nation’s indisputable right to its existence, our historical task will not be fulfilled...

Our only political concept now is an independent, sovereign state of the Ukrainian people. Any other political concepts are a dangerous and irresponsible game with the fate of a great nation”
