The leaders of Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan have signed the “Agreement on Tri-Border Point” and the “Khujand Declaration of Eternal Friendship”. The Agreement settles the border issue after 23 years of negotiations.

The Presidents emphasized that “the signing of the documents symbolizes respect for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the countries, and is an example of constructive dialogue and effective cooperation in Central Asia.”

The Foreign Intelligence Service of Ukraine reminds that the first administrative borders in the Fergana Valley were drawn by soviet authorities in 1920-1930. After the collapse of the USSR in 1991, about 70 sections of the border remained disputed. The multiethnicity and the existence of eight enclaves in the region from time to time caused local armed conflicts.

The leaders of the three countries have also agreed to expand economic cooperation, modernize border infrastructure, and develop transport links.

The settlement of the border issue is a historic event for the three countries, especially because of the position of moscow, which for years has been trying to pursue in the region a policy aimed at discord and conflict between the peoples. The agreements reached at the trilateral summit will be a catalyst for new integration initiatives that will strengthen cooperation between the Central Asian countries in economy, trade, logistics, and energy. Without involving russia in this process.
